On Wednesday 19th September, Southend Teacher Training Partnership Ltd hosted the launch of a new secondary Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) programme in Maths and Science. This will provide high calibre teachers for South Essex schools in these shortage subject areas.

The first group of 16 students was greeted by The Mayor Councillor Mrs Daphne White, local Headteachers and representatives from Southend Teacher Training Partnership and Canterbury Christ Church University.

Wendy Aston, Chief Executive Officer of Southend Teacher Training Partnership Ltd said   ”We are delighted to be working with Canterbury Christ Church University on this exciting new programme. We work hard to ensure that people on our programmes receive high quality training and support. We aim to equip them with the tools to succeed in their future teaching careers.

We owe it to our children to provide the best teachers that we can. Therefore we particularly welcome the opportunity to work with the University with its outstanding reputation for high quality teacher training”.

The programme is based in Southend on Sea, enabling students to get full access to the STTP’s state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities.  They will also benefit from specially assigned experienced teacher trainers from Canterbury Christ Church University.

Programme student, Gita Campbell, is relocating from Wokingham, Berkshire, to Southend on Sea to study for the PGCE in Maths.  Gita said: “I have previously taught in other countries and I have always enjoyed teaching.  However, I have not taken a teacher training programme before now.  This programme gives me the opportunity to teach in an area that has a shortage of Maths teachers and I am very fortunate to be one of the first to participate in the programme.”
